Hello, my name is Drae Charles and I hope to be your newest Bethel School Board member. I appreciate you taking the time to learn a bit about me and my background, my values, and the passion I aim to bring to this role. This community, and its students, deserve the best, and I plan to deliver just that, with your help!
I am a husband, father, civil servant and small business owner who is passionate about our community and those we share it with. I was appointed by the Eugene City Council as one of its newest Human Rights Commissioners, serving a three year term starting July 1st, 2022. I respectfully resigned from this seat to accept the role of Human Rights & Equity Analyst position for the City of Eugene, helping the city advance it’s social justice initiatives and fostering community belonging. Through the Eugene Consulting Group, I provide education and consulting services on the subjects of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for both the private and public sectors, and conduct investigative work in support of that ethos.
I previously worked with Lane County Youth Services to provide educational supports, resources, training, and community for adjudicated youth with an emphasis on youth from marginalized communities. I continue to work with schools, districts and public agencies to further the goal of strengthening BIPOC communities and students.
I have founded multiple community focused organizations to help empower marginalized voices and broaden community support. I also continue to support several community organizations in varying capacities. Some of these roles include:
-Eugene Human Rights Commission
-Co-Founder of the Oregon Sharks Development Academy
-Co-Chair of the JEDI Council for the Co-op Family Center
-Eugene School District 4J Department of Equity and Inclusion
-Social Equity Chair of the Active Bethel Community
-Founder of the Eugene Consulting Group
-Lane AABSS Community Support Network
My goal is to uphold the commitment I made to myself and my community:
-To advocate for systemic justice and accountability
-To educate and empower youth
-To foster access, opportunity, resources and community for marginalized individuals
